Faculty & Staff Computing Accounts

New Faculty/Staff: Activate Access to Your Computing Accounts (including UVa Email)

[Nov 23, 2009 14:09] Web access to Microsoft Live@edu accounts now works.

Your Computing Accounts

One of the very first things you’ll want to do as a new faculty or staff member is activate your new UVa computing ID, which will contain your initials, a numeral, and one or two letters, like mst3k. The process outlined below will give you immediate access to your automatically-granted computing accounts, enabling you to:

  • Sign into your UVa email account;
  • Store your files online through your account on the Home Directory Service and/or through UVaCollab, plus access Web publishing through Home Directory Service; and
  • Use UVa Exchange Service for shared calendaring, plus networked printing, Premium Server, and other administrative operations through your Eservices account.

The Activation Process

There are 4 steps in the activation process, and you can complete them all online. After you are finished, you will be given your UVa computing ID and password:

  1. Agree to abide by the policies set forth in the Responsible Computing Handbook. You may want to watch the brief Responsible Computing Video, “When I go to UVa...” to familiarize yourself with the fundamentals.
  2. Obtain and memorize your UVa computing ID and password. Once you have your password, you will be prompted to select from one of two University email services. Some departments and schools - e.g., the UVa Health System - already provide email accounts for their employees. If you are employed by one of those entities, you may wish to skip the email selection process.
  3. Complete the IT Security Awareness tutorial with a 100% score.
  4. Log in and start computing!

Note: Once you get your new password, don’t give it to anyone. If you write it down, keep it in a safe place, and don’t keep it with your computing ID.

You may change your password, but if you do, know that changing the password for one account does not automatically change the password for your other accounts.
