In-Person Identity Proofing at UVa

ID Verification: Where to Go, What to Bring, and What to Expect

The in-person identity proofing process will take just a few minutes:

  • Where to Go: Attend an Upcoming ID Verification Clinic or come to the ITC Accounts Office between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.
  • What to Bring: Take your UVa ID card and either a U.S. government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, passport, or military ID card) or any government-issued passport.
  • What to Expect:
    1. You will show your University ID and U.S. government-issued photo ID or other government-issued passport.
    2. You will then be given a personalized white PassPhrase card with instructions.
    3. From your own computer, visit the website listed on your PassPhrase card (http://whois.virginia.edu/idm), and set up your 4 personal security questions and answers.
    4. New students only: Your final step will be to create a permanent NetBadge password (the one you have used until now was just a temporary password).

If You Lose Your PassPhrase Card

If you have lost the PassPhrase card that was originally issued to you, you must go in person to the ITC Accounts Office to have your ID verification re-done and to receive a new PassPhrase card.

Why Identity Proofing?

For the past several years, UVa has made a concerted, multi-year effort to reduce reliance on Social Security numbers (SSNs), better protecting the sensitive data of students, faculty, and staff.

With the enhanced version of NetBadge, your personal security questions and answers can be used in lieu of your SSN, so ID proofing essentially helps UVa validate your identity without using your SSN, strengthening the protection of your sensitive personal data.
