Configure an iPhone/iPod touch for Use at UVa

First-Time Setup Instructions

  1. Before you do anything else, you must first register your iPhone or iPod touch for use on the UVa network.
  2. Then, connect to a wireless network:
  3. Finally, you can configure your iPhone or iPod touch to connect to your University email account.

1. Register Your iPhone or iPod touch on the UVa Network.

  1. Determine the Wi-Fi Address of your iPhone or iPod touch, so you can register it. On your device:
    1. Tap Settings, then General, then About.
    2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and make a note of the Wi-Fi Address of your iPhone or iPod touch.
  2. Register the Wi-Fi Address of your iPhone or iPod touch on the UVa network. On your computer, go to the UVa Network Registration website.
    1. Click the Already Registered link.
    2. Under Faculty, Staff, and Students, click the Enter button. If needed, log into NetBadge.
    3. Click the Register a device for network access link.
    4. In the Physical/Hardware Address field, type the Wi-Fi Address from your iPhone or iPod touch, which you just looked up.
    5. From the This is a wireless device dropdown menu, select Yes.
    6. From the Contact Group dropdown menu, select No Group.
    7. Leave the Asset Tag (optional) field blank.
    8. Leave the Serial Number (optional) field blank.
    9. To differentiate this device from your other registered devices, in the Identifying Notes (e.g. Make/Model, Location) field, type some identifying information such as your UVa computing ID (example: mst3k) and either iPhone or iPod touch.
    10. Click the Submit Registration button. It may take 5-10 minutes for the registration to take place.

2. Connect Your iPhone or iPod touch to a Wireless Network.

Note: Using Software Version 2.0 (required for iPhones and an optional upgrade for iPod touches) grants additional options for connecting to services at the University, including:

  • the ability to connect to UVa's more-secure, encrypted cavalier wireless network, and
  • the ability to use ActiveSync and have automatic “push” updates from Microsoft Exchange.

Software Version 2.0 or later is required to use ActiveSync with the UVa Exchange Service. If you haven't upgraded, then you may only connect to UVa's less-secure, unencrypted wahoo network and must use an IMAP connection to the UVa Exchange Service, which will not auto-sync.

Connect to UVa's Unencrypted Wireless Network, wahoo

  1. On your iPhone or iPod touch: From the Home screen, tap Settings, then General, then Network.
  2. Select Wi-Fi, then Other.
  3. In Network Name field, type wahoo.
  4. In the Security field, indicate none.
  5. At the bottom right of your screen, tap Join.

If your device fails to autodetect the network, you will need to manually connect by tapping Settings, then Wi-Fi, then wahoo. (If wahoo is not listed, you are not within range of the network.)

Connect to UVa's Encrypted Wireless Network, cavalier

Software Version 2.0 or later is required to use ActiveSync with the UVa Exchange Service. If you haven't upgraded, then you may only connect to UVa's less-secure, unencrypted wahoo network and must use an IMAP connection to the UVa Exchange Service, and it will not auto-sync.

  1. Join the unencrypted UVa wireless network, wahoo, following the steps above.
  2. Configure an email account on your iPhone or iPod touch.
  3. On a computer, download a personal digital certificate and save it to your desktop.
  4. Email yourself from your computer, attaching this digital certificate to the email. Send it to the email account that you have just configured on your iPhone or iPod touch.
  5. Check your email on your iPhone or iPod touch and retrieve the message.
  6. Tap on the attachment to open. The Identity Certificate for this profile will indicate this certificate is Not Verified. This is acceptable.
  7. Tap on Install, and follow the on-screen instructions as presented. The password requested is the password you used when creating your certificate on your computer.
  8. After the certificate has been installed on your device, return to your Home screen, and then tap Settings, then Wi-Fi.
  9. Select cavalier.
  10. Do not enter a Username or Password. Instead, select Mode.
  11. Tap EAP-TLS.
  12. Tap Enter Password to go back. Your certificate should now be present in the Identity field.
  13. Leave Username blank, and tap the Join button at the bottom right of your screen.
  14. You will be asked to accept the installation of the USHER certificate. Again, this is presented as Not Verified. This is acceptable. Tap Accept.
  15. The Wi-Fi Networks screen will indicate that you are now connected to cavalier.
  16. Finally, on the same screen, tap the > to the right of wahoo and on the following screen, tap Forget this Network.

If your device fails to autodetect the network, you will need to manually connect by tapping Settings, then Wi-Fi, then cavalier. (If cavalier is not listed, you are not within range of the network.)

To finish, configure your device to connect to your UVa email account.
