NetBadge Updated [Oct. 22, 2009]

On October 22, the NetBadge pages underwent a slight change in appearance, done to:

  • Encourage the use of digital certificates as the authentication method.
    Digital certificates are more secure—they protect your password from phishing attacks. The Network Setup Tool will automatically install a certificate for you and is available for Windows XP and Vista and Mac 10.4 and 10.5.
  • Prepare for "enhanced identity assurance" coming later this academic year.
    Certain University tasks—like getting grades, using employee self-service—will require the answer to an additional personal security question, established during ID verification.
  • Continue UVa's effort to reduce reliance on Social Security numbers (SSNs).
    Current state law requires that the University stop using Social Security numbers for authentication purposes by June 30, 2010.

Remember, always verify that you are on the real UVa NetBadge page before you do anything else.

  • Check the URL in the top of your Web browser; the address should be https://netbadge.virginia.edu/.
  • Do not continue if the URL is different in any way. This is the only website address you should trust; accept no imitations, as they may indicate a phishing scam.

What Is NetBadge?

When a UVa website, service, or application needs to know your identity, it automatically redirects you to the NetBadge service. NetBadge verifies your identity as a valid user of the Web resource you are trying to access, using either:

Compatible Systems for the Password Option

NetBadge is not a UVa computing account in itself. Instead, it uses your UVa ID and password from your account on:

  • blue.unix cluster;
  • Central Mail Service (CMS);
  • Eservices;

Logging into NetBadge

Logging in and out of the NetBadge service properly protects your privacy and prevents unauthorized use of your NetBadge. View complete instructions for logging into NetBadge.

Checking the Status of Your NetBadge

Once logged in, the service will remember your identity for up to 9 hours if you’re on Grounds (1 hour if you’re off Grounds). During that time, you may browse to other NetBadge-protected websites without having to re-enter your certificate or password.

At any time after you log in, you can check your NetBadge status to find out how much longer your NetBadge is valid, simply by returning to the direct-login NetBadge webpage. There you will also find a list of your most recent logins. (Note: If you are not currently logged into the service when you go to the NetBadge URL, it will prompt you to log in.)

Logging out of NetBadge

Protect your privacy and security! When you are finished browsing UVa websites that require NetBadge authentication, always remember to log out of these sites and the UVa NetBadge service before leaving your computer. Then, completely exit your Web browser. If you don’t, someone else could use your browser to log in as you.
