UVa Wireless Network

Connecting Wirelessly to the UVa Network

Wireless allows you to make a computer connection to the University network without the physical restrictions of being plugged into a wall outlet. While generally wonderful, wireless does have its limitations:

  • Just as with cell phones, you may encounter dead spots—areas with little or no reception.
  • High bandwidth applications such as video conferencing, video streaming, shared file systems, and large bulk file transfers are much slower on the wireless network.

Therefore, you should consider a wired connection your main access to the Internet. It generally provides more dependability and bandwidth. ITC does not recommend using a wireless connection when dealing with critical information or systems.
